Behind the polished gates and stylish apartment blocks of Kilimani in Nairobi, some residents say there is a side of city nightlife that most people rarely notice. In a number of the area’s high-end buildings, neighbours occasionally whisper about strange late-night happenings inside short-term apartments rented through Airbnb.
During one recent weekend, several young men were seen arriving at a furnished unit together with two women. They brought along drinks, portable speakers, and what looked like camera equipment, a sight that immediately caught the attention of a few residents passing through the building. WATCH THE VIDEO.
As the night went on, the atmosphere inside the apartment reportedly became louder. Music blasted through the walls while laughter and shouting echoed along the corridor. According to neighbours, the gathering did not appear to be a typical house party. Instead, some residents suspected the group might have been trying to record dramatic or attention-grabbing content on their phones. To some people living nearby, the apartment seemed to have turned into a makeshift filming location for behaviour they described as reckless and inappropriate, disrupting the building’s usually calm environment. By the following morning, word of the incident had already spread among residents in the complex. Several people voiced concern that similar situations are becoming more frequent in Kilimani’s short-stay rentals. Some are now calling on property managers and authorities to tighten regulations on Airbnb apartments, warning that residential buildings could easily turn into party spots where people film and share questionable content without thinking about the neighbours around them. Any word for them?
